TUNEZOID asks for your microphone. That deserves a plain answer rather than a paragraph of hedging, so here it is first.
Your microphone
Audio from your microphone never leaves your device. The browser hands the incoming sound straight to code running in the page, which measures its pitch and throws it away. If you switch Hear Input on, the same sound is also played to your own speakers or headphones and then thrown away; it goes to this tab’s audio output and nowhere else. Nothing is recorded, nothing is stored, and nothing is transmitted to us or to anyone else. There is no server that could receive it: TUNEZOID is a set of static files, with no backend of any kind.
If you have more than one audio input, TUNEZOID asks the browser for their names so it can offer you a choice between them, and an audio interface with several inputs also gets a channel picker. Those names are read in the page and used to fill in a menu. They are not stored and not sent anywhere. Your browser only reveals them once you have granted microphone access, which is why the list is unnamed until then.
Your browser controls the permission, not us. You can withdraw it at any time in your browser or operating system settings, and the tuner simply stops hearing anything.
What is stored on your device
TUNEZOID is an installable progressive web app, so a service worker keeps a copy of the page and its assets in your browser cache. That is what lets it work offline. It contains no information about you. Clearing your browsing data for this site removes it.
The Android app
TUNEZOID for Android is a separate app from this site, and it collects even less. It asks for your microphone for the same reason and treats the sound the same way: the pitch is measured on the phone and the audio is thrown away, never recorded or stored. The app does not ask for internet access at all, so it has no means of sending anything anywhere. It contains no ads, no analytics and no third party code.
It remembers your settings on the phone so they are still there next time: the tuning, the A4 reference pitch, the metronome settings and the last chord you looked at. Uninstalling the app removes them. Android may include them in your phone’s own backup to your Google account, as it does for most apps; that backup is between you and Google, and nothing in it reaches us.
What we collect ourselves
No accounts, no sign in, no contact forms, no analytics of our own. We do not build a profile of you and we have nothing to sell.
Third parties
- Cloudflare Pages hosts the site and, like any web host, records ordinary request logs including IP addresses, for security and reliability.
- Google AdSense code is present on the site. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to serve and measure advertising, and may use your prior visits to this and other sites to do so. You can review and change your choices at Google My Ad Center and read Google's practices at How Google uses information from sites that use our services.
- Google Fonts serves the typeface, which involves a request to Google's servers.
Children
TUNEZOID is a general audience tool. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything about them.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal data held about you. We hold none, so in practice there is nothing for us to return or erase. Requests about the data third parties hold should go to those parties. If you would like to ask us anything about this policy, write to [email protected].
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it.
